| | THE DECISIVE MOMENT
Henri Cartier-Bresson coined the term 'the decisive moment" as the millisecond when all the the elements of a great photo come together. It is the difference between looking at a scene and "seeing" the scene. What is astounding is that ordinary, everyday events take on new meaning if captured at the decisive moment as these two images display. Above is a photo that we simply call "France" c.1960, and is presented as an homage to Cartier-Bresson. The image has the look and feel of France and is instantly recognizable as such without further explanation. Below, we present "Sunday Afternoon"; U.S. c.1952. An ordinary event perhaps yet captured at the decisive moment under extraordinary lighting conditions. Please view our People collection for more images.
