TEXAS - 1940

How did Texans fare during the Great Depression? We present two views of life in Texas toward the end of the period.  "Idle Men", c.1940 is evidence of the unemployment situation which hit northern Texas especially hard as a result of the Dust Bowl. All dressed up with no place to go.
A scene in rural Texas at about the same time.  "Baby and the Bathwater"; San Antonio c.1940. Bathing children in this manner was a common sight in rural communities.  See more images in our People collection.
