TANZANIA FERRY SINKING

The ferry sinking on Lake Victoria in Tanzania with the loss of hundreds of lives was not the first such loss involving a ferry sinking in Tanzania or elsewhere. Overloading is usually the cause, and so a pleasant day trip can turn quickly into a nightmare. Recent ferry sinkings in Korea and the Philippines demonstrate that this is a problem of concern for many countries. Above is "Déjà Vu: The Canal Street Ferry"; New Orleans, Louisiana c.1950. The ferry was depicted the the film "Déjà Vu" (2006) starring Denzel Washington. Pictured here is the ferry "Westside". Another case of art imitating life. Below is the "Sitala Paddle Wheel" ferry, Calcutta, India (June 4, 1958). Passengers travel at their own risk. Their safety is debatable. Licensing is based on usage.
