SURVIVOR: OUTDOOR COOKING DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION

While it has always been true that camping is an American pastime, the sheer number of men cooking outdoors during the Great Depression was a result of the breakup of family units as men traveled the countryside looking for work. We cannot say with certainty that this was the case in the above photo, "Survivor: Making Coffee", c.1933, nor in the photo below, "Survivor: Breakfast Outdoors", Texas c.1937.  What we are saying is that scenes like this were all too common during the 1930s.  Hard times turn the unimaginable into reality.  People who were forced out of their homes lived in Hoovervilles, house wagons, teepees and sod houses.  For a more detailed presentation please see our 1930s collection.
