SCENES FROM THE GREAT DEPRESSION

The Farm Security Administration photographers captured several hundred thousand images during the Great Depression which have become familiar to us.  But they could not capture them all.  Shown here, "North Platte, Nebraska" (c.1935), is the scene outside the Western Union office as unemployed men are gathered.  A seemingly employed gentleman passes by without interacting.
In the time before laundromats washing clothes was done the old fashioned way.  The cost of a washing machine was out of reach for many during the Great Depression assuming your home had electricity.  "Wash Day" (c.1935) was a common sight especially in rural America.
