ICONIC IMAGES

Art imitating life. Certain images become seared into our subconscious. They may be as a result of personal experiences or through artistic expression such as in films. Every so often we at DPI are able to present an image which reawakens that subconscious memory within us.  So it is with "The Gravediggers"; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (1940). See more images from our People collection.
There is no shortage of images from the Great Depression.  Several hundred thousand were taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration.  They represent perhaps the finest example of a photo essay ever taken.  At DPI we just try to live up to their standards.  We think that "Homeless Man"; U.S. (c.1934) is symbolic of the Great Depression.   See more images from our 1930s collection.
