ICONIC IMAGES

An iconic image has the ability to affect our unconscious mind. The camera arrests a frozen moment in time preserving it for the future, and so we impart new meaning today into ordinary events from the past.  "The Water Fountain at the Henderson County Courthouse", Hendersonville, North Carolina (1915) is symbolic of a difficult period in our nation's past.
"Street Sweepers" was taken in Birmingham, Alabama (c.1916).  This is why we say that a picture is worth a thousand words.
