HOMAGE TO DOROTHEA LANGE

It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The photographs taken by the Farm Security Photographers of the 1930s have had a profound effect upon our national psyche. Dorothea Lange is normally associated with her "Migrant Mother" photo, but "Diched, Stalled and Stranded" taken in the San Joaquin Valley, California (1936) is also well known. The haunting facial image of this migrant is not easily forgotten. We present below "Shopkeeper"; Macon, Georgia (September 3, 1941) as an image representative of Lange's style. The photographer remains unknown. "Shopkeeper" is perhaps the most influential photo of our Great Depression collection.  See more images in our People collection.
