FISHING IN THE GREAT DEPRESSION

It is worth remembering that fishing during the Great Depression meant survival for the fisherman and his family. People went hungry and turned to fishing as a means to provide daily meals. The image above, "Solitude" c.1930 shows a fisherman with his cane pole alone with his thoughts as he tries to hook dinner. Below is "Okie Fisherman"; Oklahoma c.1935. In this scene the objective is the same but the venue has changed from more open water to a small stream. Both fisherman are using a cane pole. These scenes could never be confused with sport fishing using a rod and reel. The survival skills seen in these photos attest to the fortitude needed by Americans during hard times.
