DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

A commonplace image when viewed years later takes on meaning which is impossible to comprehend at its creation.  So it is with "The Possum Hunter" taken in Macon, Georgia (1941) by Richard Bowers Oliver.  Our People collection contains images of people in the context of their environment.
The Great Depression was the stimulus for some of the most important photographs ever taken.  The Farm Security Administration photographers such as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, John Vachon, Arthur Rothstein, Carl Mydens, Marion Post Wolcott, Russell Lee and many others created images which still resonate today.  "Men Looking For Work" (c.1931) is one of those rare images which is not part of the FSA collection.  We are fortunate to have this image in our 1930s collection.  We assess that the photo was taken in California.
