DISPATCH ON ASSIGNMENT:  IRAN

Required reading for this topic is Samuel P. Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order".  According to Huntington the primary issue dividing civilizations is religion.  He argues that conflict will arise based more on cultural differences between civilizations rather than on competition among nation states.  "Schoolgirls" was taken in Tehran in 1968 outside the tomb of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.
"Wall Carving" was taken in Persepolis in 1974.  Perhaps conflict between civilizations is due in part to a failure to understand differing concepts of religion.  Arguing the superiority of one religion over another leads nowhere.  The mixing of religion and politics creates varied worldviews which most definitely lead to conflict.
