COMMONALITY

What do these images have in common? This is not a trick question. Why have we paired these two images? Yes, both images are of three men. Above is an image that we call "Enter at Your Own Risk"; U. S. c.1940. Below is "Have a Cold One"; U.S. c.1940. I would argue that both are comical to a certain extent. Both come from the same time period. In the photo above a man sits outside an entrance to who knows what brandishing a .45 caliber handgun. But I also would think twice of passing these men into the interior. Below these men are enjoying a beer on a picnic. These images reflect the lighter side of photojournalism. We entitled the photo below as an homage to the film "Ricki and the Flash" in which the song "Cold One" was performed several times. See more images from our People collection.
