BIRMINGHAM

The names of certain cities and towns remind many of the struggle of the Civil Rights Movement. Because of the hardships endured in these places during difficult times the simple name obscures everything else. The mention of Birmingham, Selma and Little Rock take on special meanings for those people who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement. Above is "Cotton Pickers: Alabama"; Birmingham, Alabama c.1912. Classic imagery of cotton pickers with their bushels of cotton from that days' picking. This is just one image in our collection of cotton pickers. Below is "Birmingham"; Alabama c.1922. A serene scene on main street removed from the toil in the cotton fields.
