| | APPALACHIA: WEST VIRGINIA
Why has there been such an effort for photojournalists to document life in West Virginia? Perhaps it is because of the relative isolation of Appalachia from the rest of the country and the endemic poverty in some areas. To some extent this breeds distrust of outsiders. The photo above, "West Virginia - 1935" shows a couple standing next to their automobile. They do not seem to be having a particularly good day. Below is "Kindergarteners Brushing Teeth" (1923).
