"Red Shirt" Corner
When Merilee (far left) retired she wanted to find a way to give back that
involved children. She saw the opportunity to volunteer with SBC in the Star Tribune. Merilee was drawn to the variety of programs under the umbrella of SBC and loved the
flexibility of selecting dates to volunteer that worked for her schedule.
She says that the beauty of SBC is that there are multiple jobs at each event. Her favorite is working with presenters in the classroom, she says, "I like
seeing what the students are learning and helping with the experience." Her second favorite experience, she says, "Would be helping with Knowledge Bowl."
For the future of SBC, Merilee hopes to continue to volunteer for the different programs and to
continue to offer her skills to benefit the organization and the students, "I
am so impressed with the quality of the programs and the organization/processes
that goes in to each event. Having been a process consultant for 30
years, process is so important in staging and executing large events. I
have been so impressed with how SBC organizes their events. I am proud to be
affiliated with such a quality organization and the staff always makes me feel
like I'm a valued member of the team."
Merilee's most memorable event this year was a Middle Grade
Knowledge Bowl meet, "I was helping in the room where the top teams
competed. The team that won the room were all girls and one boy. They had such
a great team approach to huddling and then giving their answers. Plus, they
were awesome in their breadth and depth of knowledge. It was fun to see
one of the winning team members at the Young Authors Conference and being able to tell her how
impressed I was with their knowledge and team spirit."
