| | | | | | 2019 - 2020 Folders were stuffed, programs were printed, and we were ready to go for March and May YAC! Then, Covid hit.
2020 - 2021 As the world changed, so did we. SBC celebrated YAC's 30th year in a whole new way: virtually! Virtual YAC included 14 live sessions, 11 recorded sessions, 8 virtual book club sessions, 8 live Q&As, and a whopping 34 virtual blogs!
2021 - 2022: It's official. The days have been reserved at Bethel University and SBC is planning for YAC to return in person! Save the dates: March 18, 2022 May 24, 25, 26, & 27, 2022
You spoke, we listened. We will also offer another year of Virtual YAC! Virtual YAC will consist of recorded and live sessions, a Q&A with a local author, and more exciting blogs to inspire students to put pen to paper!
View a sneak peak of next year's theme and keynote speakers! | | | | 2019 - 2020 (Senior High) We made it all the way through our Metro KB season with six amazing teams heading to the MN State Meet. Unfortunately, the State Meet was cancelled and the KB season ended too soon. (Middle Grades) We were lucky enough to finish the Middle Grades Metro KB season with our State Invitational Meet on February 22, 2020 at Cologne Academy. 35 teams from around the state competed for trophies at the camp-themed meet.
2020 - 2021 (Senior High) The Metro Region adopted a new, virtual process to keep the KB spirit alive. All 11 Metro Region meets and the MN State Meet (see photo above) were held virtually this year. While hosting virtual KB meets on the gaming app, Discord, made for more time in front of the computer screen, it also meant that we never had to cancel for a snow day! (Senior High) The pandemic had many downfalls, but it also provided us the chance to coordinate the first-ever Virtual National KB Meet with Colorado and Washington. Thirty-nine teams from the three states competed this year, and we are already talking about trying to make it an annual tournament. (Middle Grades) Katie Wenzel, the Middle Grades Knowledge Bowl Coordinator, provided resources for teachers around the Metro area that allowed them to carry on the MGKB spirit in their schools!
2021 - 2022 | | | 2019 - 2020 We had a full two days of Creativity Festival packed with dance, Rangoli, OzoBots, ad writing, story quilts, drawing, and more. We also successfully launched CreativeCon at a new location -- U of MN Ted Mann Concert Hall.
2020 - 2021 We started off the school year by combining Creativity Festival (grades 3-5) and CreativeCon (grades 5-8) into the Virtual Creatives. From October-December, we worked with new presenters, offered amazing dance sessions in the morning, and learned that creativity can mean something different to everyone. One session, taught by local artist Sarah Nassif, required students to create a Naturalist Notebook (see photo above) by capturing the hidden details of the urban forest.
2021 - 2022
| | | | 2019 - 2020 STEMLink at Dunwoody College on March 12 was one that we will never forget! We had hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes all over the campus. We did not know that it would be our last event in person for the year. After the day was over, we heard about campuses shutting down and immediately began planning for ways to pivot to virtual. The next day, Minnesota began its shutdown.
2020 - 2021 We kicked off the school year with Virtual STEMLink from October-December. We offered recorded sessions, live Q&As, and exciting STEM career blog videos created by Minnesota professionals. In a hands-on session led by MnDOT engineers, students learned about water collection on roads and keeping bridges safe (see photo above).
2021 - 2022 | | | | 2019 - 2020 The Minnesota Regional Future City Competition took place on January 18, 2020 at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount. It was a snowy morning, causing the competition to shift the starting time back two hours. Justice Page Middle School's team, Nuova Venezia, headed to Nationals and won the "Most Sustainable Environmental Practices" Special Award.
2020 - 2021 FCC National announced that the entire program would be virtual. The theme was "Building a City on the Moon!" Teams created slideshows of their city models, recorded their presentations, and participated in live Q&As with volunteer engineers who served as judges. Roseville Area Middle School's Skyward City took first place and represented Minnesota at the first ever Virtual National Future City Competition (see photo above). Another highlight of the year involved FCC alumnae from Justice Page Middle School who starred in a six-part web series that follows the journeys of three FCC teams.
2021 - 2022 Here in Minnesota, we are hoping to compete again in-person at Dakota County Technical College! The theme for 2021-2022 is "Designing a Waste-Free City." Future City National will announce its plans for the National Future City Competition in late summer/early fall. Registration is open at www.register.futurecity.org.
