1 Corinthians 9:27 - The Ultimate Trophy

“No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (1 Corinthians 9:27 NIV)

by Chris

When is the last time you told your body what to do?

Most people go through lives with their body (flesh) dictating their actions. Becoming a slave to their sin.

You are called to do the contrast, however. Bring your body into the submission of the Holy spirit.

But this requires focus.

You have to get the end goal in your mind. Visualize what your life would be like once you have obtained it. Then prepare for it.

In verse 25 Paul refers to the strict training of athletes necessary to win. It reminds me of professional athletes of today and how hard they train and the rigorous activities they put their bodies through.

And the one reason why they do it…to win the championship.

They see the end result as worth the current sacrifice. They are so focused on what they get in the end that the present has no authority over the process.

How much greater is God than a trophy?

Men will put their bodies on the line just to hold a trophy. Yet when it comes to sacrificing for Christ, there are few willing.

Football players retire with ailments that prevent them from walking or talking normal for the rest of their lives. But they believed sacrificing their body was worth it.

Putting your body under submission will not have such grave rewards. Quite the contrary. You will inherit a life that far exceeds that of the present.

But you must gain control of your body.

When the alarm goes off…get up and pray.

When that woman’s shape catches your eye…look away.

When that co-worker gets under your skin…pray for them.

When it’s late at night and no one is around…turn off the computer!

Whatever the situation, bring your body into total submission to the Holy Spirit.

Your ultimate trophy of eternal life depends on it.

“Lord I claim victory over my body. I bring my flesh into total submission to your spirit. Father your promise deserves my body. Do what you will with me Lord. My singular focus remains on your promise in my life. I am ready for life’s marathon Father. Choose me. Amen”
