STUDIO UPDATES

Welcome to our studio newsletter! It's been a bit since we've done one of these, so we'd love to update you on what's been going on at MCMA. In a quick snapshot, we say goodbye to a dear faculty member, welcome two new instructors, and- back by popular demand- introduce our October Student of the Month!

And as always, if you're interested in trying out a lesson to see if it's a good fit for you, please send us a message! We'd love to schedule you an introductory lesson.

Meet Our Student of the Month!

Colin is a pianist that joined us this spring, and has taken to piano like a duck to water! He enjoys his lessons greatly, and has made great progress in a short amount of time. In the short time that he has been with us, Colin has embraced total creativity with the piano. He loves to explore new sounds, new styles and methods of producing sound on the piano, and creating his own soundscapes. Additionally, Colin is a wonderful improviser! He will sit and improvise for 15 minutes or more at a time, and has a natural sense of rhythm, melody, and song structure. His instructor Abi says, "Colin is an absolute joy to work with, as his vivaciousness, enthusiasm, and open curiosity lead him to make many discoveries on a weekly basis. I look forward to seeing what he creates each week!"

NEW FACULTY MEMBERS

Join us in welcoming two new faculty members to our team! They are both currently booking students, and Resa is developing a bluegrass workshop, so stay tuned for details on that.

RESA RANDOLPH- BLUEGRASS ENSEMBLE, ACOUSTIC GUITAR, UKULELE, CLAWHAMMER BANJO, MANDOLIN, AND SONGWRITING

Resa Randolph is a Rockport-based musician and music instructor. A lifelong musician and former psychotherapist, she came to Maine in 2009 and since then has immersed herself fully in her musical and teaching career. She is the founder, singer, guitar player and songwriter of the local bluegrass band, Miners Creek. She has taught acoustic guitar, songwriting, banjo, mandolin, voice and bluegrass ensembles both privately and through the Adult Ed programs in Camden and Bucksport, and is the founder of the Vacationland Jam Camp in Searsport. With a Master's in Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado and a lifetime of music study, performing and teaching, Resa enjoys teaching students of any age or ability.

AMORY RAYMOND- GUITAR, ELECTRIC BASS

Born and raised in Maine, Amory’s vocation is improvisational jazz theory and performance. A long-time contributor to New England’s jazz music scene, Amory has been a collaborator of many groups and ensembles in the East Coast throughout his career. His most recent project, The Trapparatus, toured New England performing jazz fusion, a genre combining jazz harmony and improvisation with rock, funk, blues, soul, and hip-hop roots. His methods and signature sound are adapted to guitar from a variety of melodic disciplines and theories to create his own unique and compelling voice. Amory studied at the Berklee College of Music and University of Maine at Augusta, receiving a BA in jazz performance in 2006. His studies focused on theory, performance, improvisation, composition, and arrangement. As a music instructor, Amory has utilized these techniques, as well as many other musical and theoretical approaches, for the past 20 years.

This is an emotional week as we say farewell to our dear faculty member Zack Bence, and wish him well on his next stage of life.

In his own words, Zack writes: "It is my extremely bittersweet duty to inform you all that after almost 4 years of teaching here at MCMA, I am going to be leaving the school this fall. As I'm sure it has for many of you, this last year and a half of COVID has put many things in perspective, and has made me consider where I want and need to be for the foreseeable future.

When I was recently offered an opportunity to move to New Mexico to work on building a music studio with one of my oldest friends and musical collaborators, as well as a place to live mere miles from my mother, the decision to relocate became inevitable. As it stands now, the first week of October will be my last here at MCMA.

It has been an absolute honor and privilege to work at this amazing school and to have had the opportunity to get to know all of you extraordinary students. I will cherish the time I've spent jamming, joking and learning right along with you. For this experience, I want to thank you all. Best of luck and I hope to see you all again further on down the road!"
