DECEMBER 2021

STUDIO UPDATES

As the end of 2021 draws near, it's hard to believe that MCMA has been in their new home for a year now. While a lot of progress has been made, there is still so much more to do. Our Annual Appeal is now in everyone's mailbox and we hope that your donations will help us fill the halls with even more music than ever before.

We are also excited to welcome our newest Board member, Piet Lammert, introduce our December student of the month and announce our Winter sessions of Music Together®. And as always, if you're interested in trying out a lesson to see if it's a good fit for you, please send us a message. We'd love to schedule you an introductory lesson!

MEET OUR STUDENT OF THE MONTH!

Richard's Instructor Tom Luther writes: Richard is fabulous to work with, and has been making great strides in his mechanics and understanding of how music can work. Richard puts in consistent, quality effort, and most key to his learning always has a question (or several). He thinks about how a phrase or a rhythm moves and often comes up with his own unique take on how to understand it. He's really developed the "processing" side of his practice, meaning understanding the music in a way that makes sense to him personally. It's this kind of deep exploration that ultimately drives learning and Richard is in that zone. It's especially obvious when we look at older pieces (typically during the holidays) and the ones that had been difficult are now easy, although we also see it with the alacrity with which he picks up new more challenging material.

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBER - PIET LAMMERT

Piet is a lifelong resident of the Midcoast and is thrilled to be joining the MCMA Board. He taught himself to play the drums at 12 years old and realized a life-long dream playing with Just Teachers, Midcoast Maine’s preeminent (and only) all educator cover band. His day job for the past 26 years has been as a certified School Counselor and Administrator, most recently at the high school level for 23 years - and counting. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2018, Piet decided to “PD proof” his life; that is, find or create opportunities to remain involved in music that wouldn’t be impacted by the neurodegeneration associated with PD. The formula “loves music + loves kids” unequivocally equals MCMA. Long a beneficiary of Just Teachers’ philanthropic giving, it is in many ways an organic progression from playing with JT to supporting others playing at MCMA. In addition to his background as a musician and educator, Piet has extensive experience building community engagement, fundraising, and grant writing.
