STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Meet our Student of the Month - Abigail!

Abby has been studying with Amory since the summer or 2022. Prior to that, she studied with Joe Cough for several years. Amory writes:

"I chose Abigail for student of the month because she embodies so many qualities of an enthusiastic and devoted musician; an avid pursuer of music with a broad range in tastes.

We started in the Fall with a process of learning a particular song that included the more complicated jazz chord voicings. As with most jazz tunes, within this song were examples of many different types of chord qualities that Abi was unfamiliar with, but

diligently integrated into her skillset. In the process of learning that song together she was able to develop and utilize some very important skills for a successful musician.

Ear Training: We listened for the bass notes and then identified the subtle qualities of the harmony to draw out a chart for the song.

Fretboard Geography: We used conceptual techniques to help learn the location of those bass notes on the lower 2 strings and to also understand how the associated chord tones related to the root.

Functional Harmony: To help understand important cadence patterns used in jazz and how they related to a key center, we delved into the relationship between scales and chords. Jazz Chart Reading: Currently, we are transferring this information to other songs and flinging open the door to reading jazz lead sheets and eventually improvisation!

It’s a cool feeling to watch Abigail make the transition from learning individual songs as separate entities, to learning about what makes them all similar. She has the curiosity, motivation and love of music to embrace this connection that will seed and cultivate her skills and ideas into the more fully developed musician that she is."
