NOVEMBER 2024

STUDIO NEWS

November is here ... it's time to transition towards winter and cue the gratitude! Here at MCMA, as we reflect on all that we are thankful for, we remain humbled and honored by the opportunity we have to provide life-changing, quality music education in midcoast Maine. Thank you for allowing us to connect with your families, support student musicianship, prioritize individualized learning, and celebrate successes alongside you. We take pride in practicing a spirit of inclusivity as a community music school, and we treasure the lasting relationships our community yields. Thank you for being a part of the MCMA family! Read on to discover the November Student of the Month, information about our Annual Appeal, Music Exploration registration, a Music Together® reminder, a faculty playlist "soundbite," and important upcoming dates.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Meet our November Student of the Month! Abby studies drums with Jeff Densmore – and plays drums in the Girls Rock Ensemble, led by instructor Khaya Cohen. A participant in MCMA’s Gig Camp (summer 2024), Abby currently also studies songwriting with Khaya. Khaya has this to say about her student Abby:

Abby works so hard at learning her parts for Girls Rock. She's on task in rehearsals, and she's extremely passionate about the group. She is also an amazing and prolific lyricist, and has taken to learning about song forms and rhyme schemes in our songwriting class. I respect how open she is about her life and how beautifully she writes about it. In songwriting, we are working on turning her lyrics into songs -- so focusing on syllable symmetry, song form, rhyme scheme, and matching the tone of the chord choices with her awesome lyrics.

Abby's a ton of fun to hang out with! She cares a lot about the people she plays music with, and is eager to spend time with them and learn about their lives, which is so important when playing music with others. It's obvious that she practices a bunch and enjoys doing so!

DONATE TO MCMA'S ANNUAL APPEAL

MCMA is more than just a music school; it is a community that encourages students of all ages to find and embrace who they are. Your donation of any amount will help us support our students as they work to achieve their goals.

OUR IMPACT

Each day, our faculty of teaching artists create life-changing experiences for their students...

"It was so wonderful to sit and listen and watch the passion and excitement for music you are supporting in our community. I was overwhelmed with the message you shared of deep learning, support and clear collaboration over competition. It was so refreshing and is so needed. It is very clear you all LOVE music and that message spills over to your students and the community."

- Lindsay, MCMA parent

MUSIC EXPLORATION REGISTRATION

Registration for the second session of Music Exploration is open -- and classes start next week... sign up now! Students who are currently enrolled can sign up for Music Exploration 2, while new students can register for Music Exploration 1.

Limited to four students per class (ages 5-8), Music Exploration allows younger music lovers to dive into rhythm, melody, instrument exploration and a bit of theory at an age-appropriate level. The intention of the class is to allow students to explore what they already love and to begin to direct their passion into a lifetime of music-making and enjoyment.

FACULTY PLAYLIST

This newsletter segment is meant to highlight the natural habits of MCMA's faculty as individuals who engage with music regularly (and passionately). Here's this month's "soundbite" from MCMA instructor Amelia Campbell:

"Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Tom Petty -- with "Wildflowers" being my favorite. It was one of the first songs that made me fall in love with older music, and it's been one of my favorites to revisit lately as I explore Midcoast Maine."
