| March has arrived! Snow is melting, the days are longer, and spring is slowly but surely beginning to make her daring moves. Here at MCMA, we are settled into our new semester -- celebrating the progress and pride that result from practicing instruments, learning from fellow musicians, and achieving personal goals. Our MCMA family is a constant, welcomed reminder that community and creativity matter... and, these days, our gratitude for those truths runs particularly deep. Read on to discover the March Student of the Month, Music TogetherĀ® spring registration, our newest faculty addition, Summer Camp announcements, Hannaford's school fundraiser, the MCMA Events Committee, faculty news, and important upcoming dates. | | | | | | | Meet our March Student of the Month! Leo has been studying with Tom Luther since 2019. Tom has this to say about his student:
āI first got to work with Leo in 2019 when he was a student in my improvisation lab. In 2023 I started teaching Leo piano performance. He was first enthralled and challenged by the instrumentās possibilities and grew to find his own unique approach to developing his skill with it. His is a very analytic and patient approach that has sent him down some interesting and beneficial paths. In particular, we were able to combine his love of certain kinds of music with his improvisation skill, by having him create model compositions based on a particular piece of music he was interested in. Through this, he was able to really understand how the piano works and how to write for it in such a way as to feel natural to the player.
This last semester was a culmination of that practice. We broke down key elements of JS Bachās Prelude #1 (WTC book 1), and I challenged Leo to create his own composition based on what he discovered. True to form, Leo accomplished his task with diligence and patience ā and by using his creative analytic skills to find ways to understand what he saw on his own terms. The piece he created is as magnificent as his process, and Iāve never been prouder of him than I am now.ā | | *It's worth noting the composition studies Tom references also served as college credit coursework for Leo's undergraduate degree. In successful culmination of his academic term, Leo recently performed his piece at College of the Atlantic. | | | MUSIC TOGETHERĀ® SPRING REGISTRATION | | | | Registration is now open for the spring session of Music TogetherĀ® at MCMA!
