SPRING RECITAL

The MCMA Spring 2024 Recital will be Sunday, June 23 at 2pm at Strand Theatre in Rockland. It'll be a packed show to please every taste: classical piano, jazz, 80s pop, broadway vocals, original student work, and drum solos from students (10 years of age to 76!). Mark your calendars -- and invite friends and family, near and far -- to this special showcase of student accomplishments!

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Meet our June Student of the Month! Cy’s been a student at MCMA since the fall of 2021, when he began taking piano lessons with Chris Pert. Since fall of 2022, he’s been taking drum lessons with Tom Ulichny. Tom has this to say about his student:

“When Cy first started drum lessons with me, I could tell right off the bat he was a musical 7 year old with tremendous potential. He immediately impressed me with his sense of time/tempo, strong rhythmic aptitude, and great sense of humor; I knew right away the fearlessness with which he approached the drum set would prove a great asset as an improviser.

Over the past two years he has consistently worked hard to improve his drumming vocabulary, reading skills, technique, and general musicality. In particular, this past semester we began listening to and studying jazz and funk, and I've been impressed with his natural ability to ease into these styles of drumming!

What has impressed me the most about Cy is his desire to be challenged -- and then work hard to not only meet that challenge head on, but exceed our goals. This approach to learning encapsulates everything we stand for at MCMA, and why he is a very deserving student of the month. Way to go Cy; proud of you, buddy!”

JAZZ IN JUNE

JAZZ ON THE TOWN VILLAGE GREEN

MCMA is excited to support Camden's Jazz in June Festival this weekend (June 14-16). Our faculty jazz ensemble (Tom Ulichny, Daniel Wenger, Amory Raymond) -- with alumni guests Emmit Dayhoof (drums) and Ruben Feldman (drums) ... plus current student performers Mason Contakos (drums) and Abigail Hersey (vocals) -- will kick off the weekend of fabulous music with a free performance on the Village Green (12:30 - 1:45).

LATE NIGHT JAZZ JAM

MCMA is thrilled to produce a late night jam as part of Camden's Jazz in June Festival. This event will be led by bandmates of the late Eric Davis (Dave Clarke on guitar and Bill Batty on drums, joined by Ezra Rugg on bass and Dan Wenger on trombone) -- and will support the Eric Davis Jazz Fund; donations will be collected at the jam. Join us Friday, June 14 at 9:15pm at Bistro La Cave!

ERIC DAVIS JAZZ FUND

Eric Davis was a prolific and beloved figure on the midcoast jazz scene for many years. Eric passed away in early 2019, but ensured through the establishment and endowment of his fund that a legacy of jazz study and performance would continue throughout the area. Each year since its inception, the Eric Davis Jazz Fund has sponsored Midcoast Music Academy's Jazz Intensive Camp, allowing young music students who could not otherwise attend to take part.

MUSIC TOGETHER®

MCMA will offer mini Music Together® five-week summer sessions in Belfast (at Waterfall Arts) and Rockport:

  • Mondays in BELFAST with Alyssa Kelly: July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

  • Thursdays in ROCKPORT with Khaya Cohen: July 18, 25, Aug 8, 22, 29

FACULTY PLAYLIST

This newsletter segment is meant to highlight the natural habits of MCMA's faculty as individuals who engage with music regularly (and passionately). Here's this month's "soundbite" from instructor Amory Raymond:

"I’ve been listening to this new, soon to be less obscure, young Jazz guitarist named Emmanuel Michael. I alway try to stay open to new music and how it evolves. The closer guitar playing gets to the spontaneous feel that horn players possess, the more I freak out over it."
