APRIL 2024

STUDIO UPDATES

As spring is (finally) in full swing, we're feeling the success of new instructional sessions and the positive possibilities of summer programming. This time of year brings with it extra doses of gratitude -- not just for sunshine and flower buds, but for the community connections we've established this past year that are so visibly thriving now. We're thankful for every member of the MCMA family!

Read on to meet our April student of the month, register for summer camp programming, purchase tickets for our upcoming music trivia fundraiser -- and learn about some community programs, recent workshops, and faculty news. LOTS of exciting stuff is happening, courtesy of our stellar MCMA community!

OUR APRIL STUDENT OF THE MONTH: JODY!

Meet our April Student of the Month! Jody started studying piano at MCMA with Chris Pert in January of 2022. She has been working on piano (and accompanying herself singing with piano) with Dan Wenger since September of 2023. Dan has this to say about his student:

"Jody is student of the month because she’s overcome difficult obstacles while studying Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. Jody is learning how to play syncopated rhythms between her left and right hands. This requires precise, independent control of her fingers and hands. In order to do this, she's practicing the difficult portions of the piece in more manageable chunks (e.g. 'play the first 3 notes of the passage, then the first 6 notes... until you can play the entire passage). Jody has learned that she can master the difficult parts of her repertoire in smaller pieces -- this is a valuable example of Jody's 'learning how to practice'.

When a challenge presents itself, Jody's sense of humor helps her not get too frustrated with it. For example, if the fingering she's working on is tricky, she may laugh when her fingers get crossed up. Without my instruction, she'll laugh it off, take a breath, and try again. This patient and playful attitude towards challenges, as well as her openness to slowing and breaking things down, is helping her move steadily forward with her piano technique."

MUSIC EXTRIVIAGANZA: MAY 17

As a nonprofit charitable organization, MCMA raises funds each year to support our mission: Midcoast Music Academy harnesses the power of making music with and for others, through equitable access to instruction, performance and community programming. It is vital to our mission that we are able to support all dedicated students who would otherwise not be able to take lessons.

On May 17, we'll be hosting a music trivia fundraiser at the Elks Lodge in Rockland. This 21+ event will deliver an evening of community fun, live music Q&A, and karaoke! Cost is $100 per team (6 people maximum on a team). Cash bar will be available; heavy hors d'oeuvres are included in the ticket price.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Did you know MCMA regularly provides music programming for local organizations? It's a treasured aspect of our work in the community -- and one we want to continue championing and promoting. If you're connected to a local organization that is interested in learning more about our offerings, please get in touch; we'd love to hear from you!

ST. GEORGE COMMUNITY SCHOOL PROGRAM

Music Therapist Dan Wenger has been facilitating a group for students in the behavioral day treatment program at St. George School. Under his guidance, they composed, performed, and recorded a track of "quiet music." The musical project supports collaboration, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging -- and the recording itself can be used to support regulation in the classroom.

OCEANSIDE HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL PROGAM

Vocal instructor Mark Power is currently working with the chamber choir (and all ACE/GT choral students) at Oceanside High School on specific vocal techniques, in a series of workshops, to help them more smoothly transition between their vocal ranges, properly warm up, and take care of their vocal health.

MAKEUP DAY WORKSHOPS

Our workshops during the recent makeup day were fruitful learning experiences. MCMA instructor Dr. Heather Beers (Positive Self Talk for Playing) and Tom Luther (Improvisation for People who Think They Can't Improvise) facilitated reflection meant to empower who we are as musicians -- and humans. Thank you, Heather & Tom!
