McDowell Minutes
June 2021

Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.... All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. (Psalm 22:3, 27-28)
Santiago Theological Seminary
  • Praise God for his provision for our seminary with the grant for outfitting our classroom.
  • Pray for direction as we discovered an unforeseen problem with the supporting columns not being adequate for building the classroom on the second floor of an existing building of Oasis Church in Santiago. We are considering an alternative for housing the seminary, which would require significant new funding.
  • Pray for Bruce's plans to travel to Dominican Republic mid-August. He had to postpone his planned trip in May due to COVID delay in getting his passport renewed. He plans to meet with board members of the seminary as they plan for the future, evaluate plans for expansion with a possible property purchase, assist Dr. Tim Witmer as he comes to teach Pastoral Theology, and produce promotional video material.
  • Praise God for the progress Bruce was able to make with the STS board on developing the curriculum for our four year under-graduate seminary program to begin in the fall 2022. Pray for finding the right professor for each of the over 40 courses.
  • Pray for the STS Executive Director, Alvaro Rodriguez, as he seeks to transition from the pastorate to working full-time with the seminary, when sufficient funds are raised.
  • Thank the Lord for the many books that have been donated for our growing library. Pray for provision to renovate space for a larger library.
  • Our seminary students recently completed a course on New Testament Survey taught by Dr. Michael Roberts. The end of June Dr. David Garner from Westminster will teach Doctrine of the Church in person. Pray for blessing for our students.
Family Update
  • Thank you for praying for Anne's recovery from guttate psoriasis, which was brought on by stress. She has been healed, especially after getting some sunshine and rest.
  • We have enjoyed the opportunity to recently care for Jolene, our first granddaughter, from Brooke and Kevin. (See picture above, interacting with Kaleah.)
  • We praise God that Bruce's daughter Abby and husband Aaron were recently able to purchase a house in South Philadelphia.
Additional Ministry Opportunities
  • Bruce has been helping Robert Luqui, from Liberia, to further develop his theological education. He is expected to start seminary in August 2021. We also hope to start Reformed Bible Institute in Monrovia. A promising start to a library of theological books has been set up.
  • For Memorial Day weekend Bruce preached at the All Florida Chinese Churches Conference, held virtually!
  • He will also preach June 29 at Northeast Community Church in Philadelphia.
  • Bruce had the opportunity to transport a bed and other furnishings for an AlphaCare client family from Honduras. After witnessing to them, he was able to refer them to a local Hispanic congregation.
  • Recently, Bruce has reconnected with people he had ministry to in Santa Marta, Colombia, encouraging them in the Lord. Esteban, a pastoral intern, is praying about starting a new church.
Writing on Islam
Bruce's writing on comparing the life and teaching of Muhammad and Jesus promotes thinking about Scripture from new angles. As he examines many facets of Islam, which frequently relate to the Bible, both the commonalities and stark differences come to light. In contrast to Muhammad's view of an unknowable god, Jesus came making known to us the God that dwells with us, free grace for salvation, and an assurance of hope for an eternity with him.
Additional Prayer Requests
  • Thank you for praying about our foster children.  We came to the decision that continuing long-term care for Kamaria (10), Kamani (8), and Kahiya (6) was not viable for us. We were under a lot of stress with daily drama with traumatized kids, two being autistic. We thought they would best thrive with parents who could take them long-term. A young Christian couple became available and took them in early May. We are thankful they are doing well there, having visited them three times. Although the social agency's plan is for them to return to their birth mother, we highly doubt that will happen. We thank God for the opportunity we had to know and make an impact upon the lives of Kaleah's siblings, especially that Kamani professes faith in Christ.

  • Pray for our court hearing on June 30 for Kaleah to become adoptable, meaning parental rights are terminated. Pray against potential hindrances. Having submitted the paperwork required for her adoption, we are just waiting.
  • Pray for our hospitality, as we are hosting a missionary family serving in the Ukraine for a few weeks, followed by another few weeks with a missionary family serving in Germany.
