Subject: Who are you, like really?

Hey Friend,

who are you, like really?

I'm putting you on a spot right now, I know.

But it's exactly what I am trying to do with myself through the scope of my work recently.

Let me explain:

Art is often created through a constant process of reevaluation, it's about 'asking the right questions'.

Because nothing in art 'is just like it is'!

Often it will take you years to comprehend what an artwork was trying to tell you when it was first created.

If you are familiar with the larger body of my work, you might have realized that I am particularly attracted to things that have a strong symbolism to them.

It's the inherent deepness, the carried-over meaning, that never ceases to amaze me and many others alike.

But why is that?

It has become more and more aware to me that the reason why strong symbols are so attractive is that their 'way of being' resonates with my deeper, inner search for identity.

To say it differently: These symbols often 'stand for something', the same way we want to stand for something, too...

" [...] Eye = soul; Skull = death; Heart = Love/Life [...]"

...and yes, as artists, sometimes we want to challenge what these things stand for, while on other occasions we seek to acknowledge or emphasize them.

Why this is relevant today: The process of finding your identity has become more and more complex, as society has become increasingly pluralistic + more and more diverse.

Back in the days when your father was a farmer, it meant that you would become a farmer, and many generations following would become farmers, too.

It's not like that anymore. All societal pressures aside, you can become anything...

...but if I can become anything, how do you then find out what you want to become?

This is a notion that especially (but not exclusively) the younger generation is facing today.

And I hope that I can provide an interesting take by throwing in some of the 'right questions' on works to come.

Excerpt from art journal | Max Ruebensal

Here's an excerpt from one of my art journals, where I tried to identify various symbols and what they mean to me.

So look forward to new works being created around the notion of our inner search for identity. I'll make sure to keep you posted!

Until then, I'd be thrilled to hear your thoughts about this - because who knows, your remarks might spark another idea for a future piece?!
