Winter 2023 Hotline Blotter: On-Farm Processing Concerns in North Carolina, Raw Dairy in Oregon, and Chickens in Maine

State: Oregon

Member called the hotline asking for assistance with raw dairy farm. Member received a letter from the state telling them to cease operations. Wanted to better understand their rights and how to stop the ongoing debate with the health department.

 

State: Maine

Non-member called the hotline asking for assistance. Their town has filed a lawsuit against them for having chickens stating they are in violation of town zoning ordinances. The town’s actions are in violation of the Maine Food Sovereignty Act and Constitutional Right to Food. Individual joined FTCLDF at the homestead member level and is receiving assistance. READ THE FULL BLOTTER.

Wisconsin Has a New Raw Dairy Bill Intended to Legalize Sales

Next week we'll be issuing a new Action Alert for Wisconsin raw dairy! Rep. Elijah Behnke, Senator Duey Stroebel along with Grassway Organics have been working hard to legalize the sale of raw dairy in the state. Demand for raw dairy is growing worldwide. IowaNorth Dakota, and Georgia legalized raw dairy sales in 2023.

Increase the Supply of Farm-Raised Meats

There are two bills on the table that will support the supply of farm-raised meats by improving access to local meat processing facilities. The proposed Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption Act or PRIME Act (H.R. 2859/ S. 907) and an amendment to the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA).
