We’ve been updating you about potential changes to raw milk legislation in Kansas. Here’s the latest update:
On Tuesday, March 15 the Kansas House Committee on Agriculture will take final action on the raw milk bill,
SB 346. If it passes there, the bill will go to the House floor. The bill has already passed through the Senate.
As SB 346 now reads, the amended bill would require labeling on raw milk and raw milk products sold from the farm to be labeled as “raw”
OR “unpasteurized.” This is an improvement from stricter labeling requirements.
The bill still prohibits misleading advertising of raw milk or raw milk products. Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) will not be opposing the labeling or advertising requirements of the bill, as the edits have addressed our concerns.
The proposed legislation, however, would still permit the Secretary of Agriculture to declare raw milk “an imminent health hazard” and to take action. FTCLDF continues to believe that this provides the Secretary with too much discretion to find a health hazard.
Please see below for suggested action to take and share this action alert with friends and family in Kansas.
Thank you.
