Nicor Gas plans to build a natural gas pipeline in Pembroke Township, Illinois, the last remaining historically Black farming community in the state. At the 11th hour of the legislative session, state lawmakers passed legislation to guarantee profits for Nicor Gas by fast-tracking new gas infrastructure in Pembroke. Now the bill sits on Governor Pritzker’s desk.
If Governor Pritzker signs House Bill 3404 (
HB3404), Nicor Gas will have unfettered access to Pembroke Township without oversight and critical public safety protection. If the Governor signs this bill, it could jeopardize some regenerative farming in this community and limit access to foods produced by small farmers and the positive impacts of regenerative farming in the area.
Regenerative farmers in Pembroke don’t want a fracked gas pipeline to the past. They are building for a resilient future with local, organic food, energy efficiency, biodiesel and solar power.
Urge Pritzker to veto the bill so that regenerative agriculture can continue to grow in the last remaining historically black farming community in Illinois.
