| NEWS DIGEST Thursday, September 20
|
| Hi Friend,
Happy Thursday! This week, we highlight the upcoming Indiana Food Freedom Act that will be introduced in the upcoming session. Please note: No matter what your state, let us know
if you learn of any bill that if passed would either increase or
decrease access to foods like cottage foods, raw milk, and fresh eggs,
or make it easier or harder for farmers/producers to provide these
foods, so that we can alert our readers.
This
week, we also hear an FTCLDF member question posed to Dr. Fisher, a
retired Food Safety and Inspection Services veterinarian, about the
20,000-bird exemption concerning poultry processing.
Thank you for reading, and have a great week!

| | Indiana Food Freedom
Indiana Senator Greg Walker announced that he will propose The Indiana Freedom in Homemade Food Contracting Act, also known as The Indiana Food Freedom Act, in the upcoming session of the Indiana State Legislature. The Indiana Food Freedom Act seeks to allow small-scale producers to sell foods made in their home (or farm) kitchens, creating greater access for consumers to healthy, local, foods. Additionally, advocates of the bill anticipate it will offer a boost to the agricultural economy and encourage sales for ranchers, farmers, and home-based producers.

| | The Devil is Always in the Details
Understanding FSIS compliance is a challenging component of
farming, and oftentimes can be confusing. Recently, a FTCLDF
member had a question regarding the 20,000 exemption for poultry
processing in Mississippi for our guest contributor, Dr. Michael Fisher. Dr. Fisher provided a thoughtful, thorough
response, and we thought it would be helpful to share with our readers.

| | Thankful Thursdays
Have
you joined us in thanking farmers for providing the nutrient-dense food
we all love? We want to hear from you about why you are thankful for
your farmers, why you are thankful for the opportunity to grow your own
food or food for your community, or simply what having access to
farm-fresh food means to you. Please send your feedback to kat@farmtoconsumer.org
Take your appreciation further and DONATE!
We have set up a new system for making donations in a snap! Please
consider setting up a recurring donation or making a one-time donation
on the launch of Thankful Thursdays. Your contributions will have a real
impact for our real food community—just a $10 monthly recurring
donation would make a significant difference for our members. Show your
support as a friend of the farm, and tell our farming community how
important they are.
