Important FTCLDF Updates on Food Policy Around the Nation; New, Federal Small
Business Requirement

Dear Friend,

We always love to report good news, and we have successfully worked with members, allies, and food freedom supporters to make some significant progress this year in several states across the nation. In the content below, I've provided a link to updates on food freedom legislation from Alaska to Wyoming that staff member Grace Hermann diligently tracked and reported.

Right now, your state legislators are planning for the upcoming legislative session in early 2025. Our legal specialist, Christine Dzjuna, has written an informative article about how to introduce and move legislation through your local and state legislature. Please be sure to review her article.

We also think you should know about a new federal requirement for certain LLCs and small business owners to register with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) by January 1, 2025.

One more thing in closing: FTCLDF operates with a very small staff. We work diligently to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. If everyone who cares about independent farms and ranches, homesteading, cottage food making, and food freedom gave a little this year to help protect food freedom, just imagine what we might accomplish in 2025!

New Requirement for LLCs and Small Business Owners Requires Federal Filing by Jan. 1, 2025

As of this past January, the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) requires certain businesses to register with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to share who has ownership and control of the business. This information is called "Beneficial Ownership Information" (BOI).

Currently, we believe all of our members who have LLCs, or other entities formed by filing documents with the secretary of state,

are required to comply. More information to come as we dive deeper into this new requirement.

Please refer to links below to get an idea of what is required and the filing deadlines. In the next few days FTCLDF will have a more comprehensive article on how this can affect our members.

The End of Legislative Sessions Across the Country Highlight the Importance of Continued Support for Food Freedom Bills

This past year, Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund has been monitoring, advising, and working to influence hundreds of food freedom bills and policies across the country in order to expand food freedom.

As state legislative sessions across the country have been winding down, we wanted to share the progress of some of the important legislative pieces we have been tracking and engaging in.

Please read an update on state legislation here.

How to Take Policy Action and Be a Changemaker for Food Freedom

In most states, the legislative session begins early in the year. During this period, news bills are introduced and bills that died the prior year are resurrected. Once introduced, the bills will make their way through both senate and house meetings and hearings over the course of weeks or months where they will be discussed, debated, studied, revised, and voted on. Some will then pass into law, others will be rejected, and still others will end up in limbo to perhaps be revived in a future legislative session.
