FTCLDF Signs in Support of the (LOCAL) Foods Act to Benefit On-Farm Slaughter

Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is one of dozens of organizations, and more than 600 signatories from across the country to support a petition by Rural Vermont to improve the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA).

Currently, FMIA only allows farmers to personally butcher animals they raised and slaughtered without inspection for their personal use.

On Sept.19, 2024 Senators Peter Welch (D-VT), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced the Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local (LOCAL) Foods Act (S.5106) to clarify that the personal exemption to protect the ability of livestock farmers, consumers, and itinerant slaughterers to practice and benefit from on-farm slaughter. Please read the full article here.

New Mexico and Pennsylvania Can Assist in Stopping Electronic RFID Tags for Cattle and Bison

Our friends at FARFA and R-CALF had a great meeting with with New Mexico Rep.Gabe Vasquez's (D, NM-2) office about stopping RFID tags.

In addition our friends at the National Family Farm Coalition, FARFA and Rural VT had a positive meeting with with Pennsylvania Sen John Fetterman’s office about RFID tags.

Both legislators are potential cosponsors of Sen. Hageman's Animal eID resolution seeking to block the implementation of the USDA’s rules mandating electronic ID on all cattle and bison moving between state lines CRA (H.J. Res. 167).

We are looking for New Mexico and Pennsylvania members who may be willing to meet with these legislators, along with FTCDF, about this issue. If you have interest, please contact  christinefarmtoconsumer.org.

Understanding and Navigating Zoning Codes

Zoning codes can have a big impact on farms!

Zoning codes govern:

(1) the types and numbers of animals that can be raised,
(2) the placement of farm buildings and other structures,
(3) the ability to build and run farm stores and businesses, and other implications.

It’s important to know in which zoning district your property lies, and what agricultural practices are allowed (or restricted).

This members-only webinar was recorded live on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024 and will provide example codes and zoning maps to help you better plan for the future and meet your operational goals;

The panelists discuss what options exist to seek exemptions or zoning changes. share some cautionary tales and success stories, and answer related questions from live webinar attendees.
