With three active farmers markets in town, it should come as no surprise that Steubenville—and all of Jefferson and our neighboring counties, in fact—is home to some thriving small farms. Now we can welcome a new agriculture event to our area: an alternative ag conference for small farms and homesteads.
The first annual Healing Land Conference will be held April 1 & 2, 2022, at the Four Seasons Community Center in Pleasant Hills. The two-day event begins with hands-on tours and workshops at several of the thriving homesteads and small family farms that have sprung up in our area. Visitors will see flocks of all-grass, chemical-free sheep and cattle, rotationally grazed dairy goats, and silvo-pastured pigs. Farmers will explain their methods of intensively grazing native forages, allowing animals to select from among local medicinal plants to optimize natural health. Organic and no-till gardening will be on display, where hardy heritage variety vegetables exhibit the best of our Appalachian food traditions.
Day two features talks and panel discussions of topics as varied as Raising Meat Rabbits to No-Till Gardening, Holistic Grazing, Beekeeping, Natural Fertility, and the One-Cow Dairy. Speakers include Shawn & Beth Dougherty, national speakers and co-authors of The Independent Farmstead, local experts like Clint Finney of Spring Valley Stock Farms and Brian Burke, MD, and talk show host and farmer Marcus Grodi, along with experienced local homesteaders, small farmers, beekeepers, and organic gardeners.
Side-by-side with the talks and panel discussions on Saturday will be live demonstrations of many homesteading skills. While young farmers assemble a mobile chicken pen or 'tractor', local craftspeople will exhibit their skills at blacksmithing, knife making, and pottery. Butter and cheese making demonstrations will share space with outdoor cooking and chicken butchering events. Participants can try their hand at setting up temporary electric fence, and watch a passive-energy ram pump move water uphill. Many more demonstrations add up to a day of extraordinary opportunity for everyone.
This local event offers a unique chance for the homestead-minded to pack a whole lot of experience into a weekend. Local craft and food vendors will also be onsite throughout the conference. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.thehealingland.com
