ACTION ALERT UPDATE: The LOCAL Foods Act Will Be Reintroduced and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) Has Signed On!

Strength in Numbers

Dear Friend,

Great news, Utah! We have learned that not only will the LOCAL Act be reintroduced Thursday, but Sen. Mike Lee from Utah has agreed to add his name as a co-sponsor of this legislation!

We thank our Utah members for their efforts in reaching out to the Senator to urge his support and are very gratified that your advocacy helped strengthen this effort.

There is still work to be done to move this legislation forward and ensure that it gets passed. Check our website and keep an eye out for future communications from us on how you can help see it through to completion.

ORIGINAL ACTION ALERT

Last year, Senators Peter Welch (D-VT), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced the Livestock Owned by Communities Act (LOCAL) Foods Act (S. 5106) to permanently protect the ability of livestock farmers, consumers, custom processors, and itinerant slaughterers to practice and benefit from on-farm slaughter.

We know that Senator Welch is planning to reintroduce the LOCAL Foods Act soon and we anticipate continued support from Sen. Sanders and Sen. Booker.

Our coalition is contacting other legislators to encourage their support and endorsement including senators from Utah. Sen. Mike Lee’s office, has expressed interest in co-sponsoring the LOCAL Foods Act, and our coalition partners met with his staff in D.C. a few weeks ago to further press for their support.

Your outreach is crucial right now in urging their support! So, we ask you to reach out to your senators in Utah and let them know the LOCAL Foods Act is important to you, your farm, and your community!

TAKE ACTION

Action Step #1

Reach out to Senators Mike Lee and John Curtis and ask them to support the reintroduction and passage of the LOCAL Foods Act.

Find Sen. Mike Lee's contact information here.

Find Sen. John Curtis's contact information here.

It is better to call their UTAH offices rather than their D.C. office.

See a sample message below.
Personalize your message, call first, and email second.

Note that legislators’ D.C. offices have been overwhelmed with calls from constituents and others in recent weeks so it’s best to call their offices located in your state where you will be more likely to get through.

Action Step #2

Sign-on to endorse the LOCAL Foods Act Now!

See this press release with more information issued by the sponsors of the Act.

Action Step #3

Spread the word! Send this Action Alert email to your friends, families and customer list.

Sample Outreach Message

As a constituent, I urge you to support the Livestock Owned by Communities to Advance Local Foods Act and to work towards more scale appropriate regulations within the Federal Meat Inspection Act to support vital small-scale livestock producers in the Farm Bill.

The LOCAL Foods Act would clarify in statute what’s currently hidden in USDA guidance: that consumers are allowed to buy a share of a live animal and then choose to have it slaughtered on-farm by a person of their choice.

The COVID-19 pandemic shone a spotlight on the severe problems with our consolidated meat industry.

We need more small-scale farmers and independent processors, but the one-size-fits-all USDA regulations stand in the way.

Personalize your message, “This bill matters to me, because…”

Legislation like the LOCAL Foods Act serves to increase #foodfreedom!

Please join us and spread the word about the importance of fair food and farming legislation.

In good health,
