Dear Friend,
We are thrilled to announce that Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) farmer member Chaz Self has succeeded in introducing a bill to allow for the sales of raw milk in Wisconsin. Chaz of Grassway Organics in East Troy has teamed with Wisconsin State Representative Elijah Behnke (R), the Weston A. Price Foundation, the Raw Milk Institute, and us at FTCLDF to author a new bill that will license dairy farmers like Chaz to sell raw milk in the state.
Senate Bill 781 [SB 781] would allow Wisconsin dairy farmers to obtain a license to produce and sell raw dairy and raw dairy products. This allows farmers who are otherwise going out of business new ways to generate revenue that stays in the local economy. The bill contains strict testing requirements, provides for farmer training, and provides farmers with access to liability insurance for raw milk.
Currently in Wisconsin, raw milk is only legal for incidental sales, meaning not regularly, or as pet food in which case it must be colored to mark it for animal use only. Though Wisconsin is often called the dairy state, the state’s raw dairy access is one of the most restricted in the country.
