Subject: 🐲🔒 Fantastic SSLs and where to find them (for free)...

Did you know that your website needs an SSL certificate?

For the uninitiated, SSL is short for Super Sally Lazarus 😉

Or more correctly Secure Sockets Layer. But that doesn't really matter.

What you do need to know is that SSL is used to establish an encrypted link between a web server and browser, ensuring all data that is transmitted remains private and much more diffcult for hackers to intercept.

So you really need one if your website collects any sort of data...

And even more so because Google Chrome is starting to block insecure content - including sites that have some insecure images.

But where do you get an SSL certificate?

You might well find that you already have one from your hosting provider - Hostgator certainly provides them for free.

They even install them too! Who says Hostgator is completely crap? Lol! 😅

Here's an article all about SSL if you're with Hostgator

Other hosting companies may have similar articles - just Google it! 😊

You do need to remember that even if you have an SSL certificate installed on your website, the insecure version - HTTP instead of the secure HTPPS - might still be accessible.

You see the free Hostgator SSL doesn't automatically force HTTPS so you will need to do some jiggery-pokery (technical term 😉) to make sure that happens.

You can force HTTPS on every page of your website by editing the .htaccess file for your website.

But please note that if you mess this up you might break your website!

Always make a safe backup of the file before you edit it!

Here's how to edit the .htaccess file

⚠ But if you're not comfortable editing back end files, don't risk it! ⚠

⚠ You have been warned! ⚠

(There's a less techy way if you have a WordPress site - but I'll get to that in a minute)

If you have Windows 10, which behaves illogically, you might need to rename the file htaccess.txt so that it will let you edit it with notepad.

But remember to save it as .htaccess before you upload it back to the server.

If your site runs on WordPress, then you can use the Really Simple SSL plugin to do the same thing:

This should also fix any "mixed content" - eg insecure images that are stored on a non-secure site.

But what if your host doesn't provide a free SSL certificate?

You can sign up to get one free from Cloudflare here

There's a bit more jiggery-pokery required to do this. Find the instructions here.

If you haven't already got an SSL certificate on your server, then you will need to use the Flexible SSL option.

So there you have it. I hope it all made sense.

Any questions, just hit reply or come and ask them in the Facebook group

It's been a bit quiet in there lately because of health, Xmas and new babies but I'd love for you to come along and help me liven it up 🥳️

May the Force be with you!
