New Oral History Project Premieres December 27 with Personal Accounts of Flint's Vibrant African-American Southside Communities
Sloan Museum of Discovery and Naavah Media premiere the newest oral history project, "Across the Tracks: Unveiling the Vibrant African-American Community on Flint's Southside," on Dec. 27, 2023, 6 p.m. on Sloan's YouTube channel. In this video, we hear from Flint's Southside residents as they give their accounts of life before and after "urban renewal" and the construction of the I-475 expressway in the 1970s. This is the third neighborhood oral history project produced by Jamal Bransford of Naavah Media.
Residents share their love for their community, their migration stories, and one resident depicts her family history to Flint from the 1800's. The themes of neighborhoods, schools, fair housing, occupations, businesses and life come alive as residents convey their lived experiences.
To watch the premiere of "Across the Tracks: Unveiling the Vibrant African-American Community on Flint's Southside," log in here by 6 p.m. on December 27, 2023, or thereafter. Feel free to leave your own memories about living in Flint's Southside neighborhoods.
More about these themes are explored in the new History Gallery of Sloan Museum of Discovery.
