Sloan Museum will close for renovation December 9
Courtland Center Mall location will remain open throughout project
Sloan Museum in the Flint Cultural Center will close for renovations December 9, 2018 and will remain open at Courtland Center Mall. Admission is FREE for everyone at Sloan Museum in the Flint Cultural Center until the building closes December 9, and visitors can experience the Flint history galleries, the “Race: Are We So Different?” traveling exhibit, and the family gallery, “Wisner’s Whizbang Emporium.” Sloan Museum’s renovation will be fully funded by private donors. No Arts & Culture Millage dollars will be used for the project. More information about the renovation project will be available soon.
“We urge everyone to take advantage of the free admission and come take a last stroll through the current Flint history galleries at Sloan Museum in the Flint Cultural Center,” Todd Slisher, Executive Director of Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium, said. “We are excited to renovate these galleries, which have remained stagnant for over 20 years.”
Beginning January 17, admission to Sloan Museum at Courtland Center will be free for Genesee County residents, and a new traveling exhibit Rainforest Adventure will debut January 19. Admission to the Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit at the Courtland Center location is currently $3 per person for Genesee County residents.
Sloan Museum is in the planning phase of its renovation project, and is seeking community participation in reimagining its Flint history exhibits. Several focus groups will be held around Flint and Genesee County, and residents are invited to attend and share their ideas for the future of the museum.
“We’re preparing for our exhibits to undergo a radical transformation, and we want the entire community to be part of the process of imagining what an inclusive view of Flint’s history looks like,” Slisher said.
Individuals can sign up to participate by sending an email to Sloan@SloanLongway.org. They will be contacted with information about the project and future focus group dates. Those who cannot attend in person are invited to send their ideas via email to Sloan@SloanLongway.org.
