The new Hot Wheels: Race to Win! hands-on exhibit was installed last week. Members enjoyed a preview on Friday night, and then it opened to the public on Saturday with a roar! Nearly 900 excited guests attended the exhibit on opening weekend, Feb. 5-6! This special installation had lots of moving parts and special requirements. Sloan's Exhibits Coordinator Amy Walker captured the installation for our members with a time-lapsed video. She also gave us some fun facts about the installation and exhibits team during this Q & A:
Q: How many exhibit team members helped with the Hot Wheels install? A: There were four main technicians doing the install with me, plus four other crew members who helped clean and prepare for the exhibit.
Q: What was the most fun part of the exhibit to install?
A: Testing out the crash track in the safety area!
Q: What types of specialists do we have on our exhibit team? A: It is generally made of up skilled museum technicians covering several different areas of expertise from carpentry to lighting.
Q: After Hot Wheels: Race to Win! ends May 15, what will the exhibits' team be doing to get the new Sloan Museum of Discovery ready to open in July? A: Exhibits will be a large support team for Collections to move everything back to the new building. I will have a small crew alongside the Xibitz [the manufacturer of the permanent custom-made gallery exhibits] crews to do exhibit installs in the galleries, as well as developing a few in-house exhibits. We will also be getting all non-gallery spaces finished and ready for the opening and emptying the Sloan-Courtland space before end of year.
