| A near-total solar eclipse will begin at 1:58 p.m. on April 8, 2024, with approximately 97% of the sun being eclipsed at 3:13 p.m. in Genesee County.
Special eclipse-viewing glasses are required to observe this astronomical event safely. If you haven't gotten your eclipse-viewers yet, Longway Planetarium's got you covered! Customized logo'd eclipse viewers can be purchased in advance for just $2/pair (while supplies last) in person at the Sloan Museum or Longway Planetarium gift shops, or through our online Shopify store. Here's a rundown of planned Eclipse activities at Longway Planetarium on April 8 from noon-5 p.m.:
- Free telescope solar viewing on the lawn* (*weather-permitting; an overcast or rainy day will mean that outdoor activities cannot happen).
- Free Build-an-eclipse-viewer hands-on activity (while supplies last)
- Free solar and lunar paper eclipse hands-on activities (while supplies last)
- Free Viewing of NASA’s eclipse stream inside the planetarium lobby
- Special showings of Totality! every 30 minutes in the dome ($3/person)
Safety Notice: Please remember it is never safe to directly view the Sun without special equipment. Our telescopes will be fitted with solar filters, and eclipse glasses are currently available for purchase online or in the planetarium gift shop during lobby hours Tuesday-Wednesday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursdays-Friday 9:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m., Sunday 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Learn more at SloanLongway.org/Eclipse.
