Sky Watchers and Shooting Star Fans! Geminids Meteor Shower Will Be Peaking Tonight!
Tonight through Wednesday morning will allow sky watchers to catch a meteor shower as a multitude of flares potentially burst in the darkness. The Geminids meteor showers have been active from Nov. 19 to Dec. 24 and their peak night is Dec. 13 to the morning of Dec. 14. "Michiganders may have a slightly better viewing advantage due to our northern latitude," said Longway Planetarium's manager, Patrick Ross. "The best way to see them is to get into a less populated area where there is less light pollution," Ross recommended.
The Geminids meteor shower, which peaks during mid-December each year, is considered to be one of the best and most reliable annual meteor showers.
Meteor showers occur when Earth runs into the debris field left behind by icy comets or rocky asteroids going around the sun. These small particles burn up in the atmosphere, leading to blazing trails of light.
