Traditional Flint Juneteenth Celebration
-a celebration of liberation-
continues through June 19
Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium's Juneteenth celebration is Friday, June 17, 2-7 p.m., part of a weekend filled with Juneteenth activities across Flint, Michigan. This is the second year Sloan Museum is hosting Juneteenth events in partnership with the Flint Traditional Juneteenth organization.

June 17 at Sloan and Longway will begin with a 2 p.m. Unity Walk and include an Ujamaa vendor fair, food vendors, African Ancestral Reverence ceremony, storytelling, dancing and a hustle-fest. Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium lawns are located on East Kearsley Street between Walnut Street and Crapo Street in the Flint Cultural Center campus. The event is free.

Effective 2021, Juneteenth became an official U.S. Federal holiday to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. It has unofficially been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. This is Sloan Museum's and Longway Planetarium's second year of hosting Juneteenth events in partnership with the organization which has been presenting the celebration in Genesee County for fifty years, Flint Traditional Juneteenth.
