End of Summer Fun at Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium

Looking for a way to end your summer with a bang? We've got four primary galleries at Sloan Museum where you'll find activities for kids, kids at heart, history buffs, and vintage car buffs. And, on August 28, please join us for our first ever end of summer patio night for 21+, the End of Summer Patio Party Wine Down at Sloan Museum.

At Michigan's largest planetarium, there are full-dome shows for the whole family, live educational shows for space fans like the new 12-part series, "The History of the Universe," and a First Friday presentation by a local Aurora chaser and author on Friday, August 2. 

Best of all, Genesee County residents receive free general admission at Sloan Museum all year long, thanks to the Arts Education & Cultural Enrichment millage, and half off at Longway Planetarium. Check out August special exhibits, shows & events below:

Join us as we say goodbye to summer with our first ever patio party! Grab a drink at the bar before going to explore the museum, or just hang out on the patio and enjoy the weather and board games. Feeling adventurous? Pick out your favorite tune and belt it out at Karaoke in the lobby. Enjoy drink specials and food from the bar and Coffee Beanery. Lego Club Saturday, August 10, 10-11:30 a.m.

Join us in the Discovery Lab maker's space on the 2nd Saturday of every month for Lego Club! For the month of August, we invite Lego-clubbers to bring their imaginations and design their very best Lego amusement park! 

Lego club is FREE, included with museum general admission, and open to Lego enthusiasts of all ages. Learn more here.

Members of Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium can enjoy early entry to Sloan Museum on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 9 a.m. - one hour prior to opening to the public! Take advantage of those member perks and come enjoy the exhibits for an extra hour!

Book Clubs Return in September!

Sloan Museum of Discovery Historical Book Club
Every first Thursday of the month starting in September at 6 p.m., Sloan Museum of Discovery hosts a free book club (included with museum general admission) in one of our learning labs. All books are affiliated with Flint's storied history. The evening will conclude with a special guided tour through the Sloan Museum History Gallery where club members can connect with the book's historical references through real-life museum artifacts. 

Longway Planetarium's "Books & Stars" Book Club
Every first Wednesday of the month starting in September at 5:30 p.m., Longway Planetarium hosts a free astronomy-related book club related to that month's Planetarium programming.

First Friday features the Science of the Northern Lights, Presented by Aurora Chaser and Author Melissa Kaelin August 2

Awe-inspiring to observe, the Aurora have astounded skywatchers for centuries. A good historian can find countless references to the Aurora in art and media, cultural legends, historical accounts, and scientific research. Discover the Aurora in a new light as you hear about each of these topics with Melissa F. Kaelin, the founder of the Michigan Aurora Chasers. Ms. Kaelin will be available for book signings to follow her First Friday presentation.

August Sensory-Friendly Feature: Perfect Little Planet

During sensory-friendly shows (offered the 2nd Saturday of every month at 11 a.m.), we turn the lights up and turn the sound down to provide a safe, welcoming environment for our friends with special needs or anyone who prefers a less stimulating environment.
