Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium
Join Forces with New Astronaut-Themed Experiences

Flint, MI – January 10, 2018 – Opening January 20, Be The Astronaut will transform a Sloan Museum gallery into a futuristic environment where visitors can choose their own space adventures. In this new exhibit, visitors will plan and pilot their own missions using videogame interfaces and hands-on command centers. At the same time, Longway Planetarium will open Space School, sponsored by ITC, a new show that explores how astronauts train for space missions in extreme underwater environments. This Cosmic Combo experience will close May 13. Cosmic Combo tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $9 for youth ages 2-11. Tickets can be purchased at SloanMuseum.org and at the door.

Be The Astronaut is a traveling exhibit by Eureka Exhibits, and was developed in collaboration with a panel of advisors in related fields who care about humanity’s future in space. The result is a unique experience that has been scientifically verified by experts at NASA for accuracy and feasibility. Be The Astronaut uses touch-screen stations and interactive simulator pods that look like space capsules to teach visitors about the concepts, challenges, and excitement of spaceflight.

Be The Astronaut: Plan and Pilot Your Own Missions
As they plan their missions, visitors can choose to explore the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, the asteroid belt, and deep space. They’ll journey through virtual re-creations built directly from NASA space probe data. Visitors will also choose the spacecraft they’ll pilot on their missions: an interplanetary spaceship, a lander, or a rover. These futuristic vehicles are scientifically plausible, all designed with assistance and oversight from NASA’s Langley Research Facility.

Mission Cycles
To complete a mission, visitors cycle through three stations: NAV, SCI, and FLY. Visitors can journey through multiple cycles to experience all available missions in the exhibit. A magnetic Astronaut ID card tracks visitors’ progress, allowing them to proceed through the exhibit’s adventure at their own pace.
NAV Station: Chart Your Course
NAV is short for Celestial Navigation. At this touch-screen station, visitors use gameplay to learn basic principles of physics, like energy and motion, and how the universe works on a macro scale.
SCI Station: Prepare Your Spacecraft
SCI is short for Science & Technology. At this touch-screen station, visitors investigate the science and technology needed to keep humans alive and healthy in space.

FLY Station: Blast Off!
FLY is the spectacular capstone to each mission. It highlights the feats of math and engineering that enable humans to travel in space. Seated in their own space capsule and equipped with a massive 70” monitor for a windshield, touch-screen and joystick controls, visitors will fly the spacecraft they’ve outfitted along the flight path they’ve designed.
Be The Astronaut is sponsored by the University of Michigan-Flint, a collaboration that brings to Sloan Museum the expertise of the school’s faculty in the areas of science, engineering, math, and technology (STEM) and gives visitors an added dimension of learning and insight into subjects related to astronomy and space exploration.

“We are delighted to partner with Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium to bring such a dynamic and exciting exhibit to our community,” said UM-Flint Chancellor Susan E. Borrego. “We believe this unique partnership secures a most compelling exhibit, while also leveraging the expertise of our faculty to give our community a most memorable and engaging learning experience.”

Space School: Under the Dome, Under Water
Under Longway Planetarium’s iconic blue dome, visitors can dive into the underwater world of outer space with a brand new show, sponsored by ITC. Space School will show daily at 4 p.m. and Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7 p.m. from January 20 through May 13. Plunge into microgravity simulation in the world’s most high-tech swimming pool, where astronauts practice repairing the International Space Station. Explore an extreme underwater training habitat as you discover how astronauts test equipment, conduct experiments, and live in isolation to prepare for space. Not to be outshined by the astronauts, this film highlights many roles involved in space exploration, including the scientists and engineers of NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations.

Together, Be The Astronaut at Sloan Museum and Space School at Longway Planetarium aim to inspire future explorers with fun and educational experiences, as well as give them a realistic look at the many career paths that can lead to a role in space exploration. Educators can plan field trips to Be The Astronaut and Space School, and round out a day of experiential learning with hands-on science or social studies activities designed to meet state content standards.
