I got an email from a great mentor Tony today whom received a note from his subscriber Phillip.
I wanted to share it with you so you too can understand what's going on.
"Tony, has something changed at Facebook? It seems like it's getting harder and harder to get good traffic from Facebook ads."
The short answer: Yes. It's changed. It's getting more expensive.
But that's not even the bad news...
The bad news is that Facebook advertising isn't going to get any better.
Here's why:
Right now, there are more advertisers on Facebook than flies on a pile of cow manure.
And more arriving every day.
That's good news for Facebook, of course.
But it also creates a problem. Here's why...
Facebook is almost at the limit of how many ads they can shove into people's newsfeeds without people getting ticked off....
Hmmm....
Lots of people wanting to advertise....not a lot of space for the ads....
Think back to your high-school economics class.
"So, class.... what happens when there's more demand than supply?
"Uh...price goes up?"
Ding ding ding! We have a winner!
That's right! The price goes up.
Plus, let's not forget who we're dealing with here.
Zuckerberg is smart. Smart enough that he was paying attention back in the day when Google had the same problem with their ad platform.
How did Google solve it?
Simple: they noticed that most of their profits came from a handful of big advertisers with deep pockets.
So Google said, "Fine. We'll just jack up the cost of the traffic and only the big players can afford to be in the game."
And that's what happened, for the most part.
There's only so many ads they can show in people's newsfeed....so they'll make dang sure that they're giving that traffic to the advertisers with the deepest pockets.
Oh, they're not going to come out and say that, of course.
They're just going to slap more compliance rules on you....shut down more accounts (with no explanation)....and make the traffic you DO get more expensive than ever.
Understand, I'm not making a prediction, here.
I'm not talking about the future.
I'm telling you this is ALREADY happening.
I talked to one guy last week who told me that his Facebook traffic is 25% higher than it was in October...for the exact same traffic.
And it's climbing.
If you've been running ads on Facebook, you see it happening, too. You know that it costs more to get the same traffic than it did 6 months ago.
The average direct-response marketer (that's me and you) used to could run a test campaign on Facebook with a modest $50/day budget and get enough traffic to do some split-testing. Then, once you knew which pages were the "winners", you could scale up.
Last year, I spent over $200,000 on Facebook advertising. I made close to a million dollars in sales on that campaign....but I can tell you that the profit margins in December were NOWHERE close to what they were in January.
So, what does this mean for you and I?
Firstly, I'd say that you should avoid the sharks.
The only people who are telling you that you should be advertising on Facebook are the "gooroos" who are trying to get you to pay them thousands of dollars a month to run your campaigns for you.
The truth is that they're in the same soup as everyone else with one exception: by making their money selling you account-management services....they make money whether you do or not.
Secondly, if you're relying solely on Facebook for traffic, that's a stupid decision.
In fact, that's not even about Facebook. You should never rely on just ONE source of traffic, no matter what it is.
Ol' man Dan Kennedy once said, "The most dangerous number in business is ONE. Because if you ever lose that ONE (vendor / client / customer / platform / system / merchant account, etc.)....then you're at ZERO."
So, if your entire traffic strategy IS Facebook, you'd better make a new plan posthaste.
("Posthaste" means "quick like a bunny".)
Seriously. Get diversified.
If Facebook is working for you, then that's great. I'm not saying you should leave. But I AM saying that you're a fool if you keep expecting FB marketing to stay like it is today.
Cost per click is going up. Cost per lead is going up. Cost per acquisition is going up.
Keep your business safe.
Get your eggs into some different baskets.
There are plenty of places to get great traffic online. Only the suckers are trying to force Facebook to take their money.
Stay smart!
