The opening months of the racing calendar can be a tough time for punters. However, it's a potential goldmine for those who know what to look for...
Looking back at last year, our services at Lucrative Racing actually put in their best performance during the first three months...
So here's a few pointers based on the approach I like to take from January - March...
1. Is The Horse Suited To Todays Ground Conditions?
This is particularly relevant around this time of year, when the going can change rapidly depending on weather conditions.
Firstly, It's worth checking the forecast at the track in question, and cross-checking with the official going to see if it's likely to change by race start time.
Then take a look at the horses previous form at today's going. Ideally, they should have at least one win or "good run" (finished within 1/2 length of the winner per furlong of race distance) under their belt.
2. Does The Trainer Have Proven Form At This Time Of Year?
Trainers often have what I call a "betting season", when they have historically performed best and are most likely to be profitable to follow.
The first thing to check is if the trainer in question has performed well recently, say within the past 30 days.
If you have access to a past racing database, you can also break down a trainers performance by month, to see if you can identify their betting season.
3. Keep An Eye Out For Improvers At Favourable Odds.
Improvers are horses with form that appears to be getting better with each subsequent run. Often, these horses don't yet have a win under their belt, and are therefore overlooked in the betting market.
This gives us the opportunity to secure some incredible odds for strong contenders in a given race.
