Break the Rules! Part 2 (The Info We were looking for...)

Taken from “The Content Marketing Rules Are Made to Be Broken”, an article in Content Marketing World by Ann Gynn

Previously mentioned, there were several rules that cry to be broken about creating content marketing…

To review, they were;

Stick to what works

Follow the formula

Repeat what works elsewhere

Focus on benefits

People have short attention spans

People don’t like long content

To continue…additional rules include…

Go for Quicker Successes (no)

Tap the brakes on short lived campaigns…

Pull over to the slower lane and build an engaged audience one subscriber at a time…

Take your audience on a long, mutually beneficial road trip, not a quarter mile drag race…

Be Consistent (no)

Be willing to change things up…

Change quickly…

Try a new format and ask for audience feedback…

Get Everybody’s Approval (no)

There is a rule of multiple approvals before publishing anything…

There is a place for approvals, editing, collaboration…

But this can be a cause for paralysis…

Don’t be Promotional (no)

The rule that content can’t be promotional or product focused should be broken…

Though it shouldn’t be all the content you do…

Even though it can be amazing…

Ask for Forgiveness, not permission (no)

This gained popularity in the last decade…

It can lead to business innovation…

But it has its downsides too...

It can make your business look guilty or at fault...

Post on All Available Social Channels (no)

Your brand doesn’t need a presence on every social media platform…

This includes the big four: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram…

If you can’t manage it well or its not making a significant impact on your business… Don’t waste time on it…

Focus on tactics that make a difference and forget the ones that don’t…

Be Everywhere Your Customers Are (no)

You don’t have to be everywhere your customers are on line…

If its not working, stop producing content…

There are no excuses for not making amazing content…

These are not all the rules that should be broken…

Refer to the article if you want more information on this interesting subject…

My take away is the so-called rules are arbitrary and we should focus on what works for us in our business…

If you’re getting results and moving forward, why listen to the noise others may be making?
