Subject: Why Music Sounds The Same

Hey Friend,

Last night I tried to get caught up on my email inbox (always a challenge!) and took some time to listen in on one of my favorite Youtubers, Jim Lill.

While Jim has his career in Country music, a lot of what he teaches can benefit us in the Rock, Pop and Blues arenas as well. I try to watch all his videos because I learn something from every one. I also really dig that this guy is incredibly talented, playing ALL the instruments (I'm a little jealous) and shares a lot of great information.

Why All Country Music Sounds the Same

This particular video really struck a chord for me (HA, pun totally intended!). I'm very intrigued by how songs are produced to create the end result, and I'm learning how to analyze music so I can better understand the "whys" and "whats."

Jim really pulled a curtain back for me when he pointed out that nearly half of the top 20 Country songs right now are using the same beat and rhythm. But then he demonstrated it, and it was almost like an epiphany for me.

As a guitar player, I can hear when the same chord progression is being used in just about every song of a particular genre. The same for bass riffs.

But I never really thought a lot about comparing the drum patterns used. That opened my eyes in a  big way!

Don't get me wrong - I love listening to interesting drum tracks, and I can play air drums with the best of them. But to consider them in the total song analysis was a total reminder to me that the foundation of a song is the driving force that compels people to listen.

Yeah, the melody and rhythm are important  and lyrics help us relate, but that rhythm is something that is in our DNA, from the time humans first hit a stick against a rock. I guess that's why Rap is so popular - it is based on rhythm and beat.

I'd like you to watch the video a couple times and think about what Jim says. Also, read through the description below the video - there is some awesome insight and it will hopefully inspire you to think more about the music you're listening to.

Have a great one - the best Monday possible!

Peace~
