Subject: Where the *bleep* have I been?

Hey Friend,

Is there something in the air?

What a week I have had!

What about you - how’s it been?

I promised last week I’d be back with the basics...

I had two false starts on emails to you this week. Two 'almost fully fleshed out' emails that just didn’t come together. Writing every day to try and send you something of substance. But...

#FAIL

It’s been a sh!t week, so you’re just gonna have to settle for this one. Sorry.

Themes

There’s a recurring theme that pops up to me when it comes to playing guitar.

It's true regardless of whether you just picked up a guitar for the first time ever 3 seconds ago, or you’re a badass pro that can give Satriani, or Vai, or Malmsteen, or Lukather a run for their money.

Here it comes.

Creating and playing music is all based on learning patterns.

And when I mean “learning,” I mean it in the very essence it’s intended: gaining the knowledge and/or skill by studying, practicing, being taught or experiencing.

As a beginner guitar player, you learn the patterns of basic scales, open chords and simple strums.

As you get comfortable with the basics and toughen up your fingers and hands, you start learning how these patterns can be moved up and down the fingerboard.

The more familiar you get with the patterns, the faster you are able to play them.

You don’t think about them - they just appear naturally in your hands and you play.

So your job is to simply learn and apply patterns.

Because once you learn them, you can then break out of them to create stunning new sounds.

That’s when you come into your own and guitar becomes a blast!

It doesn’t take as long as you might think. I’m gonna show you what I mean… just not today!

Have a "FAN-EFFING-TASTIC" Friday!

Peace~

Dave

P.S. Can I just use a “#” to express a thought? Or does it have to be hooked up to some social media platform? IDK, I’m using it, ‘cause I think you get the picture.

I failed. There it is. We all do it. Isn't the first time, won't be the last. I’ll own it, kick it to the curb, and drive on.
