Subject: Where Does Good Strumming Come From?

Hey Friend,

Happy Monday! Aren’t y’all overjoyed to be heading back to work? I’m just sooo excited!

Or not…

I’d rather be sitting here with you having a chat about music and guitar!

Did you get a chance yesterday to do a little Youtube cruisin’?

I did a little more this morning because I was curious about arm movement when it comes to picking and strumming.

I’ve always taught that good strumming doesn’t come from the wrist - it comes from your elbow. So I wanted to take a look at footage of guitar pros and their technique.

Once I got past the commercials (on every video), I kept seeing that the musicians I take much of my influence from (John Denver, the Eagles, Pete Townshend, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Neal Schon and Steve Lukather) all seem to have techniques that combine movements from the wrist and elbow.

Talk about making you question your thinking!

I don’t have any time today to dig into this more today (all those damn commercials!), but I think it’s worth talking about further.

Rhythm is a critical element to playing music, and helping you develop your technique is what I’m here to do.

Before we go further, what do you think?

What have you been taught about picking hand technique?

Peace~

Dave
